The Carthusian Office of the Mass

With the Propers for the Third Sunday in Lent

Dear Readers:

In light of the Coronavirus quarantines that are now preventing many from attending Mass, I am sharing this English translation of the Carthusian "Office of the Mass," updated with the current Sunday propers, so that the Catholic faithful who are unable to physically attend Mass can nevertheless unite themselves to it spiritually in their homes. Feel free to print this out, copy it, and share the link to anyone who might profit from it. And see also the Method of hearing Mass Spiritually for the Absent.
Yours in the peace of Christ,
-Claudio Salvucci
On this feast of St. Gregory
March 12th, in the Year of our Lord 2020.

Introit

My eyes are ever towards the Lord: for He shall pluck my feet out of the snare: look Thou upon me, and have mercy on me, for I am alone and poor.  Ps. To Thee, O Lord, have I lifted up my soul: in Thee, O my God, I put my trust. Let me not be ashamed.

Kyrie

Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

(Gloria Omitted in Lent)

V. O Lord hear my prayer.
R. And let my cry come unto Thee.

Collect

We beseech Thee, Almighty God, regard the desires of the humble, and stretch forth the right hand of Thy majesty to be our defence. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord, etc.

Epistle

A Lesson from the Epistle of Blessed Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians.
Brethren, be ye followers of God, as most dear children; and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath delivered himself for us, an oblation and a sacrifice to God, for an odor of sweetness. But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not so much as be named among you, as becometh saints; nor obscenity, nor foolish talking, nor scurrility, which is to no purpose; but rather giving of thanks: for know ye this, and understand, that no fornicator, nor unclean, nor covetous person, which is a serving of idols, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words; for because of these things cometh the anger of God upon the children of unbelief. Be ye not therefore partakers with them. For you were heretofore darkness; but now light in the Lord. Walk, then, as children of the light: for the fruit of the light is in all goodness, and justice, and truth.

Gradual

Arise, O Lord, let not man be strengthened: let the gentiles be judged in Thy sight. V. When my enemy shall be turned back, they shall be weakened and perish before Thy face.

Tract

To Thee have I lifted up my eyes, Who dwellest in heaven. V. Behold as the eyes of servants are on the hands of their masters. V. And as the eyes of the handmaid are on the hands of her mistress: so are our eyes unto the Lord our God, until He have mercy on us. Have mercy on us, O Lord, have mercy on us.

V. O Lord hear my prayer.
R. And let my cry come unto Thee.

Gospel

A Continuation of the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke
R. Glory to Thee, O Lord.
At that time, Jesus was casting out a devil, and the same was dumb. And when he had cast out the devil, the dumb spoke, and the multitudes were in admiration at it. But some of them said: He casteth out devils by Beelzebub the prince of devils. And others tempting, asked of him a sign from heaven. But he seeing their thoughts, said to them: Every kingdom divided against itself shall be brought to desolation, and house upon house shall fall. And if Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because you say, that through Beelzebub I cast out devils. Now if I cast out devils by Beelzebub, by whom do your children cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. But if I by the finger of God cast out devils, doubtless the kingdom of God is come upon you. When a strong man armed keepeth his court, those things which he possesseth are in peace; but if a stronger than he come upon him, and overcome him, he will take away all his armor wherein he trusted, and will distribute his spoils. He that is not with me, is against me; and he that gathereth not with me, scattereth. When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through places without water, seeking rest; and not finding, he saith, I will return into my house whence I came out: and when he is come, he findeth it swept and garnished. Then he goeth, and taketh with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and entering in they dwell there. And the last state of that man becomes worse than the first. And it came to pass, as he spoke these things, a certain woman from the crowd, lifting up her voice, said to him: Blessed is the womb that bore thee, and the paps that gave thee suck. But he said: Yea rather blessed are they who hear the word of God, and keep it.

V. O Lord hear my prayer.
R. And let my cry come unto Thee.

Offertory
Here is made a prostration.

The justices of the Lord are right, rejoicing hearts, and His judgments are sweeter than honey and the honeycomb: for Thy servant keepeth Thee.

The sparrow hath found herself a house, and the turtle a nest, where she may lay her young ones: Thy altars, O Lord of hosts, my King, and my God: blessed are they that dwell in Thy house, they shall praise Thee forever and ever.

V. O Lord hear my prayer.
R. And let my cry come unto Thee.

Postcommunion

Be merciful, O Lord, we beseech Thee, and free us from all sins and dangers, as Thou dost grant us to be sharers in this great mystery. Through our Lord Jesus Christ Thy Son, who livest and reignest with Thee forever and ever, Amen.

V. O Lord hear my prayer.
R. And let my cry come unto Thee.
V. Let us bless the Lord.
R. Thanks be to God.
V. O Lord hear my prayer.
R. And let my cry come unto Thee.

Last Gospel

The beginning of the Holy Gospel according to St. John.
Glory be to Thee, O Lord.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him, and without Him nothing that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men: and the light shineth in darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for a witness to give testimony of the light. That was the true light which enlighteneth every man that cometh into this world. He was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not. He came unto His own, and His own received Him not. But as many as received Him, to them He gave power to become the sons of God: to them that beleive in His name: who are born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. Here is performed a prostration.
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, the gory as of the only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. Amen.

Antiphon

To Thee belongeth praise, to Thee belongeth hymns, to Thee be glory, God the Father and the Son, with the Holy Ghost, forever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Let us pray.

O God, the protector of all who hope in Thee, without Whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy, multiply Thy mercy upon us, that with Thee for our ruler and leader, we may so pass through the good things of this life as not to lose those which are eternal. Through our Lord Jesus Christ Thy Son, who livest and reignest with Thee forever and ever, Amen.

[Additional Collect from the Mass in Time of Pestilence:

O God, Who desirest not the death of sinners, but their repentance, look mercifully upon Thy people when they turn to Thee, that, while they show devotion to Thee, Thou mayst turn away from them the scourges of Thine anger. Through
our Lord Jesus Christ Thy Son, who livest and reignest with Thee forever and ever, Amen.]

V. O Lord hear my prayer.
R. And let my cry come unto Thee.
V. Let us bless the Lord.
R. Thanks be to God.
V. And may the souls of the faithful departed, by the mercy of God, rest in peace, Amen.
